Welcome back to 1895.

Ah, Christmas! Gemma Doyle is looking forward to a holiday from Spence Academy, spending time with her friends in the city, attending ritzy balls, and on a somber note, tending to her ailing father. As she prepares to ring in the New Year, 1896, a handsome young man, Lord Denby, has set his sights on Gemma, or so it seems. Yet amidst the distractions of London, Gemma’s visions intensify–visions of three girls dressed in white, to whom something horrific has happened, something only the realms can explain. . . .
The lure is strong, and before long, Gemma, Felicity, and Ann are turning flowers into butterflies in the enchanted world of the realms that Gemma alone can bring them to. To the girls’ great joy, their beloved Pippa is there as well, eager to complete their circle of friendship.
But all is not well in the realms–or out. The mysterious Kartik has reappeared, telling Gemma she must find the Temple and bind the magic, else great disaster will befall her. Gemma’s willing to do his intrusive bidding, despite the dangers it brings, for it means she will meet up with her mother’s greatest friend–and now her foe, Circe. Until Circe is destroyed, Gemma cannot live out her destiny. But finding Circe proves a most perilous task.

Taschima:

Were back at 1895. Gemma is eager to go and spend some time in London with her family and friends, but most of all she wants to get away from Spence.

Things are getting difficult inside the realms, and outside as well. Kartik is back, and he is insisting Gemma that she has to bind the magic of the realms, before everything goes weary. Not only this, but her visions are intensifying and she is seeing this 3 girls in white, which could probably hold all the answers, or lead her to her doom.

Im my opinion this novel is ten times better than the first one. It got me more engage, and I didn't want to fall asleep, or stop reading all together.

You won't help but to be annoyed, but love all the same the characters. Gemma and their friends are the perfect representation of girls on 1895. They want their freedom, but are bound by the customs all the same.

In this novel we get to see a lot of character development, and learn a lot about each girl and their lives. Still, Ann annoys the hell out of me, and Felicity keeps going between hot and cold. Felicity is a rather an unpredictable character. She is strong, but maybe too of a mean girl at times. Gemma on the other hand is kind, a heroine. She is the one that makes most of the growing in this novel.

At times this book scared the hell out of me, and trust me I'm not one to be scared easily. It was creepy. A most enjoyable ride.

The ending was one that although it seemed tight, left us with more questions than ever before. Questions that unfortunately are left unanswered until the next installment.

Libba Bray keeps enchanting us with her creations, and I cannot wait to read the next one in the series.

  3. I desagree with both comments above, I think the first and the second where the best, I was very disapointed with the ending of the third book.

I still think the series is VERY worht reading, it's a very charming and dangerous feeling you get with these books and I hope she writes a fourth one, which is very unprobable but not impossible!

  7. I really need to read this book. I read the first one about a month ago in preparation to meet Libba Bray in Chicago, but didn't have a chance to get to the rest of the series.

And btw, Libba rocks! She was one of the funnest authors to meet.
